The material in this report is based on 106 cases of pancreatic diseases, which were treated surgically at Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, SNUH during 5 years from Jan. 1968 to Dec. 1973.
The results hare as follows
1. The incidence of pancreaticldiseases was 2.1% of all patients (4896 cases) admitted to oui Department of Surgery.
2. Among 106 cases, acute pancreatitis 51 cases (48.1pancreatic cancer. 32 cases(30.0%), pancreatic abscess 12 cases (11.3), pancreatic pseudocysts 8 cases (7.5%), pancreatic injury 1 case and annular pancreas 1 case.
3. The diagnosis of pancreatic diseases was rather difficult, the cardinal symptom and sign were upper abdominal pain, indigestion, weight loss, upper abdominal tenderness, mass palpation, jaundice but they: were all nonspecific.
4. The laboratory data were also nonspecific, but X-ray - findings were much valuable according to the disease nature.
5. In acute pancreatitis, 51 cases: operation was performed in 24 cases and conservative treatment in 27 cases, but mortality in each group was almost same.
6. In pancreatic cancer, 32 cases: male to female ratio was 1. 29: 1, and the peak distribution was in 41~60 years of age(84.4%). Pancreatic head origin was observed in 18 cases and metastatic lesion was confirmed in all. Palliative operation was tried in 23 cases and the status was improved in 43% of cases at the time of discharge.
7. In pancreatic abscess, 12 cases: surgical intervention was performed in 9 cases, among which 3 cases were expired and 1 case underwent reoperation. 3 favorable cases were cured with medical treatment.
8. In pancreatic psuedocyst, 8 cases: drainage of the cyst was given to all 8 cases and good results were obtained in all these cases.
9. Each case of pancreatic injury and annular pancreas was presented.
